1. Swaddle-Me
If you wish to catch a little sleep during your newborn stage, then PLEASE PLEASE swaddle your baby. Babies are born with a startle reflux, they extend their arms out as if they are falling and reaching for stability. This reflux will startle your baby from sleep and he/she will wake up often.
Your baby is used to living in a tight snuggle place for nine months and the swaddle will mimic that feeling. At first, we thought that our baby Elise hated being swaddled so we unswaddled her and we got no sleep. I mean, I DID NOT sleep! She cried all night long. It was such a hassle having to swaddle her on those pretty cotton muslin blankets to have her break through them all the time. My biggest fear with these pretty muslin swaddles was Elise ending up with loose fabric in her bassinet.

This SwaddleMe changed the game for us (just velcro away)!
2. Tracking App
The Baby Tracker app is easy to maneuver. It is the greatest invention for a mama. This app will help you keep track of feedings, diaper changes, sleep, medications/vitamins, and milk inventory. It has both breastfeeding and formula options. I love how it reminds me which side I fed Elise last and the amount that she spend at the breast. The sleep tab also gives me an idea of when she is due for a nap. I LOVE LOVE this app! Future mamas, this is a MUST must-have! It will make your life so much easier. Another awesome feature of this app is the ability to synchronize it to other phones.
Your significant other or family members can record data for you when they are watching the baby and it will appear on your phone as well.
3. DockATot
OH the famous DockATot ! Let me just say that the price of this pillow lounge looking thing is completely WORTH IT!!! I truly believe that this item is one of the reasons why Elise sleeps through the night. It gives our baby that snuggle feeling and reminds her of the good ol days in the womb.4. White Sound Machine Rohm
This portable white sound machine is a favorite of ours. If you are a soon to be parent, you might be searching for a lullaby song monitor. I know I did! However, I soon learned that white noise cancels out daily sounds that you might make at home. So please, stay away from thinking babies sleep to lullaby songs but if this has work for you then go on! I like to sing Elise a lullaby song before bed but then the white sound machine goes on for the rest of the night.
We love this item in particular because it is portable, and it helped our baby have a better experience in her carseat. She would immediately stopped crying as soon as she heard this familiar sound. I believe that this little machine helped her be an amazing car traveler. Plus, it takes no space in your suitcase or diaper bag.
One of our biggest rookie mistakes was using our phone to play a white sound machine. But, if a call came in...the song would stop and our baby would wake up.
***Make sure to leave this Rohm sound machine connected to its battery cable all night because if the battery dies....again the baby will wake up!***
5. Baby Monitor
This monitor is simple to use and I love that it displays the room temperature. A baby's room should be at a recommended temperature of 68 - 72 degrees fahrenheit to avoid overheating. The risk of SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome) actually increases if your baby is too hot (The Sleep Advisor, 2018). So, don't over dress them to bed and please learn about safety sleep. Keep blankets away or any type of loose fabric from baby's crib!
6. Baby Carrier
For our baby, we have both a baby wrap and ergobaby carrier. However, I highly recommend a baby wrap for the newborn stage. Elise was not as comfortable in the ergobaby as the baby wrap because she would sink in it and was too small. The ergobaby carrier will be in my six months must have list. But for a newborn, a baby wrap is the way to go! Oh and they are pomeranian dog friendly too! The baby wrap we love is called "Tuck and Bundle."
7. Crinkle Paper
I came across this crinkle newspaper on amazon and it is our favorite find till this day in the toy department. Our baby LOVES the sound that it makes and looks at it with such wonder. Black and white pictures are highly encouraged for newborn babies. I will attach an article that talks about the importance of displaying black and white images to your baby here. Oh and this is a favorite shop of ours too! (Black and White link)8. Bath Flower
We are still bathing our daughter in this flower!! We chose this Bath Flower over the plastic hard bathtubs because it keeps her warm and cozy. She has never had to feel her skin rub against a cold plastic surface, and it is so easy to clean. First, we squeeze all the water out (like really squeeze it out) and wrap the baby's used towel around it. Then, walk over to your washer and place it on spin cycle to get all the extra water out. Finally, throw it in the dryer. This keeps the flower bath from getting smelly versus being air dried.
9. Nose-Frida
This Nose Frida has replaced the old school boogie sucker. Have you ever wondered...how do people clean the inside of a booger sucker? Well, nose frida is a much more hygienic tool to get those boogies out. We only use it once a week because doing it too often could cause irritation. Here is a link to watch a video on how it works (Nose Frida Video).
By the way, our baby will wake up at night if she went number two and we do change her diaper! It happens on a very rare occasion.
10. Burp Clothes & Bibs
I've lost count on how many Organic Muslin bibs and burp cloths we have. These our simple and cute if you ask me. Also, breastmilk stains don't show up on them like other bibs/cloths. Please do me a favor, add these to your baby shower registry, you will not regret it!
11. Buttpaste
Babies little bums are very sensitive to the acid in their pee or poo poo. We apply a thick layer of this buttpaste on our baby everynight before putting her to sleep. She has been sleeping through the night and we do not change her diaper till morning time. This buttpaste has kept her skin protected and (knock on wood) but till this day she hasn't had a diaper rash and she is now six months.By the way, our baby will wake up at night if she went number two and we do change her diaper! It happens on a very rare occasion.
12. Nursing Pillow
I am extremely sad that I did not find My Breast Friend Pillow sooner. I had the boppy pillow but it provided me with no back support and my baby kept sliding off of it, it was so frustrating!! This nursing pillow is the BEST gift that you can give a soon to be nursing mama. You will be spending all day and night feeding your baby and this pillow will make things a little bit easier.14. Onesies
Save your money and please just buy your newborn baby onesies. Maybe buy one or two fancy little outfits for special occasions, but trust me you will love to have your baby in easy access onesies to change those 14+ diapers a day. Your baby will enjoy being in comfy clothes too!
This was a gift to us and we were so blessed to have for our newborn. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends room sharing with your baby but on a separate surface to decrease the risk of sudden infant deaths. Please read more about this here (Sleep and Room Sharing). A little tip, our baby hated the fancy features of the halo (vibration and sounds). So if there is a halo bassinest that is cheaper without these features then go for that one!
15. Halo Bassinest
Bonus items!
Taking Cara Babies
This is a bonus one but the most important must have if you ask me. Please go follow Taking Cara Babies right now (She is on instagram too)!! I mean go follow her right now and start educating yourself in baby's sleep. It will save you sanity. Our baby Elise has been sleeping through the night since she was two and half months. She is able to self soothe to sleep without crying and I owe it all to Taking Cara Babies. Please learn and pay attention to your baby awake window but don't stress over a rigid schedule. Babies love and strive on routines, but don't loose yourself when things are not going well.
The Perfect body wash shampoo! It is a bit pricey but worth every penny. One bottle last us five months. We squirt once in a bowl and combine it with warm water along with our favorite bath sponge.
As a child development major, I love helping families and children. This list was so fun but yet important for me to put out for families that can benefit from. The newborn stage can be a very sensitive and emotional time, it was for me and these items made things easier.
